Chatham, once thriving along The Medway, has lost its civic pride, identity, and job opportunities, becoming divided by wealth and lacking community values. The Historic Dockyard, once a hub of innovation, is now static. This project aims to rejuvenate the site with sustainable programs that adapt to environmental changes.
The Medway River silts and floods every 15 years, with flood walls degrading landform diversity and reducing agricultural benefits. Restoring terraced embankments can stabilise soil and prevent erosion. Located in Kent, "The Garden of England," the Medway supports significant biodiversity but is underutilised.
Adaptive design embracing floodplains' dynamic nature can transform Chatham into a vibrant space celebrating water, land, and community. Collaboration with farmers and charities can turn flood-prone areas into cultural, ecological, and recreational assets. Integrating native medicinal plant cultivation with tide cycles creates a living laboratory for environmental resilience and community engagement.
